I asked where PaGu had gone.
Grandpa said PaGu turned into high mountains and big rivers and had beeintegrated into heaveand earth after creating them.
I asked, "WillI be able to see PaGu later?"
Grandpa said, "Yes. The greemountains were made from PaGu."
Imy young heart, the story of PaGu creating heaveand earth was thus engraved. The cloud-capped greemountains became heroes imy mind.
WheI was able to read by myself, I was fascinated by myths once again. A lot of colorful, beautifully illustrated fairy tales were piled omy sickbed. The illustrations unraveled the mysteries that my grandfather hadn't beeable to unlock for me, but sometimes shackled my imagination. For example, what clothes did the people ithe fairy tales wear? Grandpa had never told me. Ithe illustrations, there was Nv Wa surrounding her waist with big leaves, Hou Yi wearing hide and shouldering a bow and SheNong with white hairs, long beard and a gourd hung at his waist, etc. Yet, without these illustrations, I thought, I could freely imagine the characters ithe fairy tales.
For instance, I could let Nv Wa wear a large silk dress with long sleeves like the fairies ithe movies that could fly to heaveothe wind. I could let Hou Yi wear boots and armor because there were high mountains far away where lived ferocious beasts and huge monsters that brave Hou Yi had to tackle.
Imy childhood, myths were like white cloud floating ithe blue sky and changing into infinite patterns imy heart or like a gardewith various flowers alternating with countless colors. They were like mirages seebut never to be reached, but gorgeous, magical and spectacular. Mythology was also a unique textbook, engraving such words as hard-working, kindness, bravery and faithfulness omy mind.
The passage of time didn't ruimy innocent yearning for returning to the childhood. At night, wheI was writing by the light of the lamp and felt exhausted and puzzled, Grandpa's deep voice seemed to echo imy ears: a long, long time ago.... Hence, a remote story, bleak, tragic, grand and boundless, appeared ifront of my eyes, caused my deep and wide-spread reverie and brought me romantic and charming feelings. I returned agaiand agaito the world of myths and went to look for their origivia following the development track of the ancient civilization. I thought the eternal charm of mythology was the outcome ofinfinite humaimagination.
Today, as for the moderpeople living iglass houses, their artistic creatiomay need refreshing with more imagination.
From ancient times, myths became popular stories after being passed doworally from generatioto generation. The simple heroic feelings of ancient people were encased ithese stories. Their imaginings of the origiof the world and interpretatioof the real world were simple and touching, full ofbrave and daring spirit and with poetic, romantic and beautiful colors. The original aesthetic sense of ancient people was contained therein. I was always surprised by the story of PaGu creating heaveand earth, which had many striking similarities with the legends of other nations about the origiof the universe. For example, there is also the legend that the universe originated from chaos ithe myths of ancient Greece. Evethe current theory about the universe originating from a big bang also holds that ithe course of the earth's formation, the cosmic dust and other solid substances agglomerate into a crust around a core due to gravlity and such light substances as air rises and forms the atmosphere. I was stunned by the ancestral wisdom and the conjecture transcending time and space.
