《小侦探内特》系列图书来自大洋彼岸、在美国热销多年。首本成书于1972年，迄今为已经40多年。图书刚出版的时候只有内特的故事，没有后半部分的趣味活动。
兰登书屋在2005年对该书改版的时候添加了后半部分趣味活动，重新编排的小侦探系列另增加谜语、笑话、烹调秘诀和手工艺活动页面，读者在书中解谜之余也尽情享受有趣的真实世界，由此得到了广泛的好评，也使图书的销量更掀一波高潮。在美国被誉为“具开创性的儿童小说”，被列入美国小学生书单。 “具开创性”指的是可以开发儿童的逻辑思维，提高孩子的兴趣，让孩子能够在故事中走向独立阅读，是从绘本阅读到独立阅读的过渡，填补了幼儿到儿童之间的阅读空白。
美国的小学生每个学校都有各自的书单，Nate the great套书基本上覆盖了美国各个小学的书单，所以销量很高，且销售时间长它是一套侦探故事系列小说，主要讲述主角Nate和他的爱犬Sludge所遇到的一系列神秘案件，帮助他的家人和朋友们，解开日常生活中碰到的难题。大侦探内特挂着一小撮牛奶胡子的俏皮模样已经成为美国家喻户晓的经典形象。
小说故事内容新颖特别，极具想象空间。故事情节相当生活化，故事的内容虽比不上福尔摩斯或者是柯南来得复杂难解、悬疑深奥，但是其选词不难，大多通俗易懂，是生活中的常用词语。书中的案件也都是生活中常见的小事，对于充满好奇心，而刚开始试着阅读小说的儿童来说，是非常好的读物。
前二十册桥梁书由 Marc Simont绘制插图，而后七册章节书则是由Martha Weston和Jody Wheeler仿照着Marc Simont风格继续绘制插图。
