The romances were either recited by professional minstrels or written to be read aloud. But in both cases the audience was usually that of the court or of the castle. The romances had nothing to do with the common people. They were composed for the noble,of the noble, and in most cases by the poets patronized by the noble.
Ⅳ.Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur
Le Morte D'Arthur (i.e.the Death of King Arthur) is a collection of stories about King Arthur, translated from French by Sir Thomas Malory.Of Thomas Malory,William Caxton, the printer of the book, writes that he was a knight, and completed Le Morte D'Arthur in 1470,fifteen years before Caxton printed it.In modern times,Malory has been identified with an English country gentleman and soldier, who was a member of Paliament for Warwickshire in 1445, and later fought on the side of Lancastrians in the War of the Roses. In 1450 he was charged with several crimes and sentenced to imprisonment.Le Morte D'Arthur was written in prison, where he spent a great part of the last twenty years of hislife.
King Arthur is a romantic hero, whose original may be traced to an ancient Celtic chieftain Arthur of Wales who led victorious battles against the Saxons.Early Welsh tradition made Arthur into a king of wonders and marvels, and a series of legends about him were fabricated by medieval poets and writers, especially by French romancers, The legends of King Arthur are the foundation of Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur. But Malory,in retelling the whole Arthurian story, selected the most interesting parts, such as the adventures of the Knights of the Round Table at Arthur's court, the quest of the Holy Grail (i.e.supposedly the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper),the illicit love affair of Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere, the death of Arthur, and the dissolution of the fellowship of the Knights of the Round Table.Malory treated the Arthurian legends in the spirit of medieval knighthood and chivalry, which suited the feudal times when a greatmilitary brotherhood was often established in the house of some great prince or noble lord.
