【作者简介】
赖世雄教授是闻名海峡两岸的英语教学专家，先后获得美国明尼苏达大学大众传播与英语教学双学士学位，担任托福专任讲师 18 年，也是托福成绩满分记录保持者之一。赖教授曾任上海复旦大学以及大连外国语大学客座教授，现任常春藤解析英语杂志社社长，著有英语升学、进修、生活英语、儿童英语、职场英语丛书两百余种，并担任多家电台英语教学广播主讲。
1993 年赖世雄教授开始担任中央人民广播电台英语教学节目主播，时间长达12年，教学方式风趣幽默、深入浅出、妙趣横生。2003年赖教授被《中国图书商报》评选为中国英语教学十大名师之一。2004年至今担任北京市政府主办英语活动之主讲教授。2014年1月，赖世雄教授的“美语从头学”节目在北京外语广播台开播。
赖世雄深入研究英语教学，对广大英语学习者的需求有极为透彻的了解，长期以来受邀至各地演讲，不遗余力地传授读者英语学习的经验。

【前言】
阅读的重要性：语言既是交流的工具，也是思维的工具，而阅读是语言学习的重要方面。英语阅读是帮助小学生达到《》总要求的重要途径。《》明确指出，小学毕业生能借助图片读懂简单的故事或小短文，并养成按意群阅读的习惯，尝试阅读英语故事及其他英语课外读物。要达到这样的目标，没有足够大的语言输入是不行的。大量输入以广泛接触为宗旨，自然输入，自然吸收，不强记强背，更不要求接触的全输入，输入的全吸收，吸收的全输出。大量的阅读正是语言输入转为输出的必不可少的途径。它可以帮助学生得到乐趣，获取信息，培养学生的英语阅读理解能力，使学生养成良好的英语阅读习惯，具有正确的阅读技巧，拥有主动学习的能力和合作的精神，为终身学习打下基础。阅读既可以帮助学生巩固所学的单词，更是扩大词汇量的好方法。因此在小学阶段培养学生的英语阅读能力具有重要的现实意义。发展学生英语阅读能力，重要的条件是要有合适的阅读材料。我们在编写此书时考虑了语言的难易程度，内容是否符合儿童的年龄与兴趣，是否能吸引学生，同时尽量与小学英语教材相结合。本书特点：针对小学生的阅读心理，本书遵循了以下原则：（1） 阅读材料的趣味性小学生处于学龄初期（7 岁到13 岁），因此本书阅读选择了一些幽默、笑话等让学生在一种轻松状态下习得知识；本书每篇阅读还配有插图，从感知上引起学生对阅读材料的兴趣。（2） 阅读材料的循序性过难或过易的阅读材料都不利于提高学生的阅读兴趣。因此材料的选编应难易适度，循序渐进，分为基础篇与提高篇，学生做完基础篇后，阅读能力有了提高，可过渡到提高篇。（3） 阅读材料的多样性本书的阅读材料体现了多样性：人物、家庭、学校、动物、植物、科学、环境、地理等。阅读题型也体现了多样性：选择、判断、填空、回答问题。
